Stabat Mater Atelier - A Catholic Art School with a Full 4-year Training in Classical Naturalism

Finally, somewhere that offers a rigorous training in traditional.drawing and painting PLUS a Catholic inculturation so you understand the artistic traditions.

I recently visited the Stabat Mater Foundation’s Atelier (www.stabatmater.org) in Tyler, Texas and was excited by what I saw. I recommend that anyone who wants a traditional artistic training consider going here. They take people as absolute beginners and form them as master artists through their 4-year program using the ‘academic method’ developed in Renaissance Italy. If you are looking for an art school that not only teaches the skills but also forms you intellectually to understand Catholic culture, apprehend beauty, understand sacred geometry and the mathematics of beauty, and directs you to the traditional spiritual life of Catholic artists, then this is the place for you.

While there, I met with students who had gone straight from high school to study full-time because they wanted to be professional artists. I also met mature students and even high school seniors who trained a day a week and more during vacations.

In addition, Robert Puschautz, who runs the Stabat Mater Atelier and teaches the students, along with Art Fellow AnneMarie Johnson, regularly receives commissions for sacred and secular artworks. They offer the senior students apprenticeships so that they can work on the commissions with the Master artist.

Pontifex University and Scala Foundation recommend this training and are partnering with them in their mission to re-establish the tradition of painting beautiful art in America. I will post their newsletters regularly so you can see what they are doing. We will work with the atelier to assist in their formation through Pontifex classes, and I am planning a future visit to assist in their formation. Watch this space!
