David what an excellent article. I stopped painting the abstract art because it wasn’t beautiful. I love photography and my goal is to photograph all the beauty of Gods creation- national parks beautiful cathedrals and works of art and have a stock photo site of beauty according to your definition. I am very interested in this idea and appreciate so much you explaining it so well. I am struck in my own life to discover this truth that you so beautifully described: “Therefore, beauty tends to awaken in us a desire for something greater than what we see—the source of that beauty, who is God Himself.” As people we seem to be searching more and finding God less. I can’t help but think this pathway should be further examined.
The via pulchritudinis - the Way of Beauty after which this substack is named is a much discussed pathway to God...how often it is actually followed is another matter of course.
